Clinton postcard might come back to haunt him

A racially insensitive moment from former US president Bill Clinton's past is coming back to haunt him. It is a postcard that he had sent his grandmother Edith Cassidy in 1966. The card depicts a black youth eagerly polishing a huge watermelon titled, 'Hope, Arkansas - Home of the World's Largest Watermelon'. Pagesix.com reports that he was just 19 then and he wrote, "Dear Mammaw, Thought I would send you one of your cards just to prove I'm using them! My tests are over and I'm just starting the second term. Hope you are well and happy! Love, Bill." An auction house, which is selling it, calls it "a throwback to the outrageously broad portrayals of African-Americans of a century earlier". I want to perform in India again: Geldof

Legendary singer Bob Geldof loves visiting and performing in India and is sure that with the rising popularity of the Indian music and films will probably see an Indian artiste organise something similar to Live Aid and Live 8 concerts for humanitarian causes. "Bollywood is so big and is simply getting bigger by the day. For instance, in Nigeria people don't know Hindi but they love Hindi film music. The thing here is that the lingua franca of the world is not language but music," Geldof said Friday on the sidelines of Hindustan Times Leadership Summit in the capital."That's why I believe that someday an Indian artiste will organize a concert like Live Aid or Live 8 for a humanitarian cause." The lead singer of the hugely popular band Boomtown Rats, a rock group closely associated with the punk movement in the 1970s, Geldof had organized two concerts, Live Aid in 1985 and Live 8 in 2005, where he brought together the best in the music world to raise money for humanitarian causes in African nations.Live Aid raised more than 100 million dollars for famine relief in Africa. Geldof, who has worked with artistes like Madonna, U2 and Pink Floyd, believes that the "artistes don't have to care about such causes at all"."It doesn't really mater if artistes don't care about such burning social issues or causes. All that I care about is to get access to their huge fan following and get across my message.""Pink Floyd has been separated for the last 25 years. They simply can't stand each other. But for the Live 8 concert, I got all the guys together. By that one persuasion, I got access to 90 percent of America."Geldof scoffs at the suggestion that these artistes come together to gain popularity."Do you think Madonna wants more popularity? Or U2? Or Pink Floyd? These guys are already huge. Simply by a little persuasion, they are ready to come forward and perform. They get no money, and are not on the lookout for more popularity," he said.Geldof and his band had come to India in 1978 and had performed in Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai."I remember someone telling us that India didn't have a big rock following but we were amazed at the huge response we got.""What I most miss today is not being able to sing, perform and play music. I would love to come to India and play here," he said.

Despite her baby bump that had everyone speculating about whether she is pregnant, the pop princess did not let anything stop her from putting on a showstopper. She started her performance with the first single from her new album, Ain't No Other Man. Dressed in a white suit with a matching fedora, she grooved to the beats of the music (there was a full live band, including a four-piece horn section) and the applause of the crowds. Regular costume changes (10 in all), trapeze acts, fire throwing and stilt walking provided the crowd with a magnificent visual feast. She performed several of her biggest hits, including Dirrty, Beautiful and Fighter.Other songs included Candyman, Lady Marmalade, What a Girl Wants and the ballad Hurt. She also struck a poignant note when she performed Oh Mother, an anthem inspired by her family's battle with domestic violence, accompanied by a very graphic video. The polished performance of her Back to Basics tour is a far cry from her days of stringy black hair and leather chaps. "The sexuality coming forward on this record is more softened. It's more pin-up, tongue-in-cheek. It's playful," Aguilera said. But that doesn’t mean there is no flaunting! "I feel empowered when I express myself sexually. Any woman who's going to strongly express herself sexually, there's always a backlash," she said. "It's very important to me as a female to play upon sexuality and be very strong while incorporating that in my art and work." And her husband, Jordan Bratman, certainly doesn’t mind. In fact, he is a huge fan of her sexy shows. "My husband supports every pelvic thrust. He'll even ask me why I'm covering up and tell me to show it all off," she said.

Elton John removes photos from gallery

A British gallery that turned over a photo of two naked girls to police amid child pornography concerns has closed the exhibition at the request of Elton John, who owns the collection. The BALTIC Center for Contemporary Art, in Gateshead, northeastern England, said it closed "Thanksgiving," an installation of 149 pictures by American photographer Nan Goldin, at John's request. "After the removal of one image from the series it was no longer possible for BALTIC to exhibit the collection of works as the artist intended," the gallery said in a statement. "Therefore BALTIC is sympathetic to Sir Elton John's request and supportive of the decision." The gallery alerted police Sept. 20, and authorities are investigating whether the photo violates child pornography laws, The Telegraph reported. Police confirmed they were looking at the picture to assess whether an offense had been committed, but have refused further comment. John, who purchased the "Thanksgiving" installation in 1999, said last week that the picture, "Klara and Edda Belly-Dancing," had been exhibited across Europe and the United States without any objections of which he was aware. A statement from Jane Jackson, curator of the Elton John Photographic Collection, that was posted Monday on the 60-year-old rocker's Web site said: "We have made arrangements to close the `Thanksgiving' installation at the BALTIC with immediate effect. It was always intended that the installation be exhibited as a whole, and not on a piecemeal basis, and our decision has been made with regard to the artistic integrity of the work and the artist."

The film will star Hugh Jackman once again as Wolvey, and is said to be a prequel to the successful X-MEN flicks. But what attracted the acclaimed director to the movie? "What appeals to me about the Wolverine character of all the other characters is that my feeling that he's the one that suffers from the most existential angst... Since I'm a guy who loves emotional complexity, it seemed to me that… when I was first approached to do it, my first thought was, 'What? Me? Do this? What is that? I don't know enough about comic book characters.' And of course, I then did some further research and I realized that the character of Wolverine, I think his great appeal lies in the fact that he's someone who in some ways, is filled with a great deal of self-loathing by his own nature and he's constantly at war with his own nature. It seemed to me that really what it is, is that it's a little like great Greek mythology, which is something I've always been in love with where the Greek Gods threw thunderbolts and Poseidon conjured up storms, but those mythological stories were designed to examine emotional truths. It seems to me that the character of Wolverine epitomizes in a modern context, a kind of great mythical tradition of using larger-than-life characters in order to play with and examine human emotion at a sort of operatic level."

Cate Blanchett Plays Queen Again in Elizabeth: The Golden Age

Cate Blanchett, who earned an Academy Award nod for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in the 1998 period piece Elizabeth, reprises her role as the strong-willed leader of England in the sequel Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Set a decade after the events depicted in Elizabeth, the sequel finds Queen Elizabeth I dealing with challenges by King Philip of Spain as well as the passionate supporters of imprisoned Mary Queen of Scots. After declaring herself married to her country, Queen Elizabeth I also finds herself unable to be with the man she loves, the handsome and engaging Sir Walter Raleigh (Clive Owen).Blanchett didn't immediately jump at the chance to play Queen Elizabeth I again. Instead, she had to be talked into slipping back into the character. “I think what convinced me was time, really," explained Blanchett. "I found that the notion of the love triangle, the very structure of the narrative, was quite different. Because I had always said that if they did another one, that Elizabeth shouldn't be the central character. And because the structure of the romance -- because it's an unabashedly romantic film -- I think was cut different, and so it didn't feel like treading the same ground."

Barker and Moakler Refuse to Give Up on Marriage

Former Blink-182 star Travis Barker and his estranged wife Shanna Moakler are giving their marriage another chance--because the former beauty queen refuses to give up. The couple went through a bitter split last year, and after a brief reconciliation, they broke up again this summer. But former Miss USA Moakler hopes the third time is a charm for the on/off couple--and their two kids. She says, "My parents have been together for more than 40 years. I believe in my vows, and I'm working hard and will do everything to maintain them." Meanwhile, Moakler insists date nights will save her marriage: "I love seeing Travis with the children, but I love his romantic side best."

Spears Loses Custody of Her Sons

Britney Spears has lost physical custody of her sons. Los Angeles County judge Scott Gordon ruled Monday that the boys' father, Kevin Federline, will retain full custody from Oct. 3. The news comes after Federline's lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, presented his client's case in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday morning. Reports suggest Kaplan raised concerns about Spears' qualities as a mother after she was spotted driving without a license over the weekend while her children were in the car. Insiders claim Kaplan also brought up Spears' driving-without-a-license charge from Aug. 6, when she was involved in an alleged hit-and-run offense after crashing into a parked car in the San Fernando Valley. The emergency hearing lasted an hour and took place behind closed doors. Meanwhile, Spears' could face more legal trouble if she fails a court-ordered, random drug test, administered twice weekly.

Cruise Extortionist Found Dead

The man who tried to extort $1 million from Tom Cruise and his wife Katie Holmes over stolen wedding photographs has committed suicide in Phoenix. David Hans Schmidt, 47, was due to be sentenced on Oct. 11 for the crime after pleading guilty in August to transmitting threatening communications with the intent to extort. But Lt. Anthony Lopez, spokesman for the Phoenix Police Department, revealed on Saturday that Schmidt--who was being held on house arrest until sentencing--was "found dead in his home around 3 p.m. Friday." Cops visited his house after noticing his ankle-monitoring bracelet had not moved. Schmidt, who has been dubbed the 'Sultan of Sleaze' for peddling sex tapes of Parish Hilton and Colin Farrell, is believed to have taken his own life after suffering from depression. He faced up to two years in prison, one year of supervised release and a substantial monetary fine when he was due back in federal court. Cruise married Holmes in November 2006 in an Italian castle in Bracciano, near Rome. The Hollywood couple sold the photo rights exclusively to three celebrity publications.

Lohan to Temporarily Leave Rehab with Her Father

Lindsay Lohan will be spending five days of "quality time" with her father, Michael, next week--in a secret location away from her Utah rehabilitation clinic, according to reports. The mean girls actress, 21, checked into the Cirque Lodge in Utah in early August to seek counseling following two drunk-driving charges earlier this year. Her mother, Dina, recently insisted the star's third stint in rehab will not be coming to an end any time soon, despite reports to the contrary, and now ex-convict Michael says he will be whisking Lindsay away as part of the rehab center’s outpatient therapy program. He tells the New York Daily News, "I'm looking forward to spending the next week with her. We've been in constant phone contact. She's in a great, great place now. I've never heard her so honest, contrite and focused. "Lindsay is weeding out all the bad. She's taking a step back and reevaluating her life. What she tells--her honesty and openness--has brought me to tears. It's beyond words how proud I am of her." And Michael--who has become an ordained minister since being released from jail in March--hopes his visit will encourage Lindsay to kick her drug and alcohol addictions completely, because of his own experiences with illegal substances. A source says, "They believe Michael's the best person for Lindsay to be with now. "Not only is he her dad--someone with her best interests at heart--but he's also someone who successfully turned his own life around after battling substance abuse."

Madden and Richie Set Wedding Date?

Rocker Joel Madden has proposed to pregnant girlfriend Nicole Richie--and the couple is planning to wed in October, according to reports. Madden, 28, recently appeared on TV and revealed his hopes to make the Simple Life star his wife, but admitted he had no idea where or when. He said, "Obviously, marriage is in our future. I don't know when or where or how, but right now our priority is our family and the baby. "That's all we've been thinking about. We are in love and are really happy." And it seems Richie, 26, has accepted the Good Charlotte singer's proposal, with TMZ.com claiming preparations are already underway for a wedding in Laguna, California, on Oct. 13. A representative for Richie--who is due to give birth to the couple's first child early next year--has yet to comment on the reports.
